DomPing is one of the latest Internet domain checking tools and it is a very powerful tool. It is normally used for manual fault isolation purposes but it could be used for a variety of other domain checking purposes. The functioning of ping is quite simple. The ping command sends a small packet to a particular domain or an IP address for testing the effectiveness and speed of the network communications. The packet bounces off the domain or the IP address and ping calculates the time taken by the packet to reach the domain and return back. Hence, the basic function of ping command is to test the network and find out how fast your computer could reach another domain or IP address in the network. However, due to the heavier load it imposes on the network, it would be advisable not to use domain ping command from automated scripts or during regular operations.

The term ‘Ping’ was derived from ‘Packet Internet Groper’. The most modern ping program that is widely used as a versatile diagnostic tool on the Internet was written and compiled in its present form in December 1983 by Mike Muuss. Since Muuss felt that the domain ping command worked just like a sonar ping locating objects from sound echo, he named it as ping. The domain ping could be used to perform the following diagnostic tests on the WWW network.

Website Check for Access

DomPing is used to verify whether another computer is easily reachable. This provides instant website check. If a particular website is not responding to the domain ping command but other websites are answering, then you could be sure that the network is fully functional but the particular website is down or inaccessible for some reason. However, if none of the websites are reacting to ping, then it would be obvious that the entire network is down.

Checking Domain IP Address and Website Ranking

The DomPing command is widely used to probe a particular domain IP address or a domain name. When you ping a particular domain name or a website, the correct IP address of the website and its ranking are displayed in response. Here is top 1000 websites rank by alexa: top 1000 .net, top 1000 .de…

Google Checking with DomPing

Google analytical checking, Google AdSense checking, Google Adwords checking, Google Checkout, etc. could be done quite easily by properly incorporating the Google Analytics code to your website. Once the procedure is over, you would be able to ping Google and get reports on all these aspects and check the status of each page that you ping. The details of visitors would be automatically displayed if you had correctly embedded the Google Analytics code on each page of your website and you ping Google for the details of the visitors.

At DomPing.com, we had been specializing in customizing the features of ping to suit the needs of each client through exclusive processes. We had assisted numerous network administrators to ping and track several domains or TCP/IP addresses simultaneously and automatically generate report error codes. These reports would be directed to your email address to enable you to evaluate and check domains, websites, rankings, Google AdSense, Google analytics, etc. Contact us for complete details of ping benefits.

Asus has its work cut out for it in finding a market for the UL80Vt-A1. This ultraportable laptop has a higher price ($849) than many similarly specced competitors, though it′s in the same ballpark as its $800 stablemate, the Asus UL30A. So how does Asus justify the price tag?

The answer is surprisingly simple: long battery life (6 hours on our review unit) and better-than-average flexibility. The UL80Vt-A1 includes both a discrete nVidia G210M graphics system and an integrated Intel alternative, so users can switch on the fly to adjust the laptop′s performance and battery life to the task at hand. Another appealing feature is the unit′s power-sipping LED backlit display.

The UL80Vt-A1 comes with 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium and 4GB of DDR3 memory installed. The Intel processor at the heart of the ultraportable is a 1.3GHz CPU factory-overclocked to 1.7GHz. The UL80Vt-A1 earned a WorldBench 6 score of 76–reasonably swift for its class but hardly smoking fast. In any case, the user experience was generally positive.

The UL80Vt-A1 felt pretty snappy and responsive during everyday use, even with Aero Shake and Flip 3D enabled. The dedicated nVidia graphics kick in by default at high performance settings. As a result, the laptop turned in frame rates above 35 frames per second on both Unreal Tournament 3 and Quake Wars: Enemy Territory at 800 by 600 resolution and high quality. Though the UL80Vt-A1 isn′t a gaming machine, you can throw games at it occasionally and get surprisingly playable results.

When closed, the UL80Vt-A1′s attractive brushed metal finish on the lid looks slick without seeming ostentatious. With the lid is open, things remain streamlined, but the glossy finish around the display and around the keyboard made the typing experience problematic: My hands constantly stuck or skidded across it. That′s a shame because the keyboard itself is great, with a Chiclet-style layout of inlaid keys on a flat panel.

The UL80Vt-A1′s 14-inch display delivered so-so color reproduction, tending toward a slightly washed out appearance. The screen is bright and extremely readable in every lighting condition we tested it in, including direct sunlight. In fact, at its highest setting, the display sometimes verges on too bright. I would have preferred a higher-resolution screen, but this might have presented problems with the switchable discrete/integrated graphics options. Despite the underwhelming resolution options, I havd no trouble with such day-to-day tasks as working with Word documents and Excel spreadsheets.

Editing those documents is another matter. I′ve already mentioned the slippery finish around the keyboard. The mouse button is awful. In lieu of dedicated right and left clicks, you get a single button that pivots left or right on a central point. This design is getting more common these days (it also shows up on the Gateway NV5807u, for example)–and the trend needs to stop. You have to use considerable pressure to get the button to click, which makes working with the mouse even worse.

The UL80Vt-A1 comes with a fairly robust array of software options for protecting and restoring data. The backup utility is intuitive and yet reasonably feature-rich. The electronic user manual is welcome, too.

The laptop′s speakers are standard fare for an ultraportable not expressly dedicated to multimedia. The sound quality isn′t awful–with no appreciable distortion at moderate volume levels–but the absence of a dedicated subwoofer makes the UL80v inappropriate for serious listening.

The UL80Vt-A1 covers its base respectably. Strong battery life and surprisingly responsive performance give Asus′s latest rig two solid legs to stand on. The only major drawbacks here are the price and that wretched mouse.

With a solid combination of slick graphics and snappy functionality, SportsTap scores well as a sports fanatic′s mobile companion. The free Android Market download provides frequent score and result updates for the major sports in an interface that′s fairly easy to navigate.

The main screen provides icons for the major sports leagues like the NFL, MLB, the NHL and the NBA as well as shortcuts to major college and international professional sports. Games in progress are indicated by a red ball with the number of active games next to the appropriate icons. If a major event such as the US Open tennis tournament is underway, a screen-wide link may be provided.

In addition to the Android app itself, you can install a SportsTap widget so you can scroll through scores and schedules from your Android phone′s desktop.

You can choose favorite teams, which are promoted to the top of the screen when viewing a list of scores. If you′re traveling, selecting LocalTap will take advantage of your phone′s network and/or GPS locator capabilities and list scores and schedules of sporting events within 50, 100 or 200 miles from your location. You can set up audible and visual alerts for score changes and for the start and end of games.

For example, if you click on the MLB icon, a list of current Major League Baseball games appears with scores for active or completed games. Also available are links to photos, news updates, player transactions, team schedules and season category leaders.

Clicking on an active MLB game opens up a graphic game summary, complete with the current batter and pitcher, the number of outs and the positions of any runners on base. A scoring summary is also included, as well as links to other information, all of which are updated frequently.

A similar level of detail is offered for NFL football games. While the game is in progress, you get play and scoring summaries and a graphic illustration of a football field with indicators which let you know which team has the ball and where.

Most of the functions and settings in SportsTap worked well when tested on a T-Mobile myTouch 3G handset with Android 1.5 (Cupcake), but some of the smaller text-only links may be hard to poke if you have large fingers and don′t give a visual indication that you′ve actually clicked them. The data provided are not as detailed for some sports, such as NCAA college football, and some users reported in the Android Market feedback area that they experience problems with some notifications and updates.

SportsTap is also available as an iPhone app and on the Web.

Price: Free Developer: Mobile1Sports LLC

Age Rating: 4+

Compatibility: Requires Android OS

The Canon Pixma MP560 Wireless Photo All-in-One color inkjet multifunction printer is priced to appeal to students and home users ($150 as of November 24, 2009). Compared with the like-priced Epson Stylus NX515 and HP Photosmart Plus, it offers better paper handling and ink costs–but slower performance.

In our tests, the unit′s performance was generally middling, but sometimes better. The unit printed plain text at a rate of 6.4 pages per minute; graphics averaged about 2.6 ppm. Its scanning speeds were the fastest among our test group, while its copying speed was average. On plain paper, black text and copies looked just slightly fuzzy, while line art and halftones looked detailed. Flesh tones appeared artificially pink on plain paper but improved on Canon′s own photo stock.

The Pixma MP560 has better paper handling than do most units in its price class. Automatic duplexing is standard. A 150-sheet, vertical-loading slot in the back of the printer accepts media ranging from 4-by-6-inch snapshot paper to legal stock. A second, front-loading drawer holds up to 150 sheets of letter-size paper only. The trays flex easily under pressure, but that′s my only quibble.

The silver and black chassis looks sleek while the printer is at rest; to use the machine, you just start opening doors. You flip up a door on the top right to reveal the 2-inch color LCD and the control panel, where intuitively labeled buttons surround a control wheel. As you rotate the wheel, menu items rotate on the LCD. Three media card slots are housed in a small compartment on the front right, and a PictBridge port sits below them. Bluetooth support is optional with a $50 add-on. USB and wireless connections are available, but not ethernet.

This model′s ink costs are lower than average–and are particularly affordable compared with the exorbitantly priced inks that come with the Epson Stylus NX515. The machine ships with a 350-page black cartridge, a 665-page photo-black cartridge, and cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges with yields that range from 470 to 505 pages. Replacement black costs $14.99 (4.3 cents per page), while the other colors cost $12.99 apiece or about 2.6 cents each per page. A four-color page costs 12.2 cents. The cartridge bay is located inside the printer, under the scanner unit; although the slots aren′t keyed by color, an LED will flash and an error message will appear on the control panel if you inadvertently slide a cartridge into the wrong slot.

The low price of the Canon Pixma MP560 comes with the trade-off of slow performance. If you can tolerate that, you′ll certainly enjoy the cheaper inks and plentiful features it offers compared with the competition.

Dell′s 3130cn Color Laser Printer is a near-perfect starter printer for a small office or workgroup. It′s extremely capable on all counts, and it has room to grow.

The tall, broad 3130cn is as powerful as it looks. In our tests, plain-text pages burst out at a rate of 25.3 pages per minute (ppm), one of the faster times we′ve seen. Its tested graphics speed of 5.7 ppm is extremely fast. The speed wasn′t the only thing that impressed us, though: Text looked crisp and black, and photos appeared realistic even on plain paper.

With so much available power, I was surprised that Dell omitted a duplexer from the unit′s standard configuration; this would let you save on paper, and–with the 3130cn′s power–you would barely notice the speed hit. Dell sells an optional duplexer for $199, but a duplexer comes standard on two laser printers that cost far less than the 3130cn: Lexmark′s C543dn and Konica Minolta′s magicolor 2530DL.

The 3130cn′s otherwise generous configuration starts with 250-sheet input and output trays and a roomy, 150-sheet multipurpose tray. An optional, 550-sheet second input tray ($229) expands capacity significantly. Strategically placed decals and colored markings make it easy to figure out common tasks such as loading paper and changing toner on the fly. A two-line, monochrome LCD with navigational buttons adjacent makes the menus easily accessible.

My only real peeve is with the front panel. Well, actually there are two peeves in this area of the design: On the harmless side, anyone who wants to open that panel could easily unfold the multipurpose tray by mistake, because its pull-down handle is right on the front. The harder-to-find side button, which opens the entire front panel of the printer to reveal the toner cartridges, also exposes the transfer belt; I′m just waiting for some butterfingers (like me) to drop a toner cartridge right on this delicate piece.

The 3130cn′s toner costs reflect the greater savings you get with higher-capacity toner cartridges. The machine ships with standard-size supplies: a 4000-page black (K) cartridge, and 3000-page cyan (C), magenta (M), and yellow (Y) cartridges. At these capacities, you′ll pay just 2 cents per plain-text page, about 12 cents for a page with all four colors. The high-yield versions (all 9000 pages) offer true savings: black costs $132 or 1.5 cents per page, while each color costs $241 (2.7 cents per color), resulting in a four-color page cost of less than 10 cents.

The Dell 3130cn would be a welcome workhorse for any small office or workgroup. It has the speed and print quality you′d expect from a color laser, and it can expand with your business.

Even for a desktop replacement laptop–a category filled with oversize eye-grabbers like the HP HDX18 and the Alienware m17–Toshiba′s Qosmio X350-Q708 is an extrovert. A flaming red beast of a machine, the X350-Q708 packs a lot of cutting-edge hardware, but some of the design decisions it incorporates are dubious.

This $4200 laptop packs a 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme processor with four CPU cores; 4GB of RAM; and two nVidia GeForce 9800M GTS video cards, each with 512MB of RAM, set up in SLI mode. In addition to running in standard SLI graphics mode, the Qosmio X305-Q708 lets you dial down to use the integrated GeForce 9400M graphics; this increases the laptop′s battery life (which is just 1 hour, 24 minutes in full graphics mode) and decreases its heat and noise. The laptop measures 16.2 by 12.10 by 2.5 inches and weighs 12.4 pounds with the power brick in place.

On PC WorldBench 6, the Qosmio X305-Q708 turned in a somewhat disappointing score of 100. That′s 33 points behind the mark posted by the competing Eurocom D901C Phantom-X, despite Toshiba′s inclusion of such components as a 128GB solid-state drive to handle the OS, and a 320GB hard-disk drive to store files in). Nevertheless, the X305-Q708 did a creditable job with Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and Unreal Tournament III, cruising through them at high settings and 1680-by-1050-pixel resolution, managing frame rates of 52 frames per second and 75 fps, respectively. In comparison, Alienware′s more affordable m17 posted frame rates of 44 fps and 51 fps on the same two tests.

Unfortunately, after loading this Quosmio with high-end components, Toshiba skimped on the 17-inch screen. It is fairly bright, displays vivid colors and sharp text, and even supports a fairly wide range of horizontal viewing angles, but its WSXGA 1680 by 1050 resolution is a bit underwhelming. Most other laptops in its class–even the Gateway P-7811FX (which costs about one-third of what the X305-Q708 costs–have a 1080p-friendly 1920-by-1200-pixel resolution.

But what you lose in screen resolution, you gain in visual flair. The X305-Q708 comes in a black and red case with reflective flames, glowing red LEDs, and lots of curves. The brash design won′t appeal to everyone, but it adequately frames a generous array of ports, including three USB 2.0 ports, one eSATA port (which doubles as a fourth USB 2.0 port), an Express Card 54 slot, and a four-pin FireWire port. You also get a modem port (tucked away beneath a hard-to-open plastic port cover), a multiformat flash card reader, and built-in support for a wireless USB device. On the video front, the Qosmio X305-Q708 provides VGA, HDMI, and DisplayPort outputs. Since this pricey laptop fully supports 1080p resolution when outputting video to an external monitor, it′s a shame that there isn′t a Blu-ray drive.

The laptop′s keyboard sports a superglossy coating that looks fairly sleek but makes the keys unusually slippery. Most of the keyboard (which comes complete with a four-column number pad) feels full-size, but the spacebar is extremely narrow. You′ll also notice some flexing as you type, and overall the keyboard feels thin and cheap. The touchpad, which sits flush with the palm rests, has a fine grain texture that distinguishes it from the rest of the body. The effect is attractive, but often the right side of my palm would touch it as I was typed, moving the cursor somewhere else in the document–to my intense frustration.

The Qosmio X305-Q708 excels in delivering pitch-perfect sound, thanks to four Harman/Kardon speakers and an embedded subwoofer. Games, music, and movies all sounded superb, with a wide range of highs, mids, and lows. Even at full volume, the audio exhibited no noticeable distortion. Though the speakers sound great on their own, the included Dolby Control Center software can deliver remarkably effective simulated surround sound–as long as you sit directly in front of the machine. Unfortunately, the lower-left speaker sits directly beneath your left wrist as you type, muffling the sound significantly.

On the software side, Toshiba refrained from installing a bunch of bloatware on this laptop. Besides Windows Vista Ultimate, an Office trial, and various CD/DVD applications, this is a clean laptop. Toshiba does include a number of its own apps, including a voice command utility, and facial recognition software. The voice application worked adequately after calibration, but ambient sounds–even the clicking of the keyboard–caused it to open and close applications. Similarly, the system′s face-recognition software, which lets you log in without using a password, worked well enough–but only when there was sufficient ambient light.

Is the Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q708 worth buying? That′s the $4200 question. In light of its unimpressive screen resolution and odd keyboard, you′ll have to provide your own keyboard, monitor, and mouse if you plan on having a serious gaming session at home. And though this desktop replacement has some of the most advanced hardware on the market, plus a class-leading sound system, you can get comparable gaming and multimedia performance for a fraction of the price from competing laptops. That said, half the appeal of this machine consists in watching it turn heads at your next LAN party. Trust me, it will.

The program, available as a $15 download, creates a separate index of all your messages, which can take a while–the program says this step can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. On my PC, it took 55 minutes to sift through about 5000 messages. Completing the indexing step, though, allows for searches that are much faster than what the regular Outlook search function offers. It also permits you to view all messages to and from a particular correspondent easily, or to gather related messages (a “conversation”) together in a list with the click of a button.

Those are all useful features, but you can′t reach them within Outlook. NEO Find runs as a separate program that, by default, launches automatically when you start Outlook. (You′ll have to shut it down manually, though.) You access NEO Find by clicking its icon in the Outlook toolbar or in your system tray. Its tabbed interface includes two options: an Outlook-like view and another mode that swaps in a list of all your correspondents for the mail-folder view.

In the Outlook-like view, your e-mail folders appear on the left, while the familiar message list and preview pane sit on the right side. A search bar sits at the lower left of the interface. You can type in search terms, and choose whether you want to look in the subject, body, and/or names and addresses. Once your results display, you can further filter them by status (such as read/unread or flagged), by containing folder, or by date.

The second, correspondent-centric view lets you click a contact′s name to see all e-mail messages sent to and from that person. You can apply the same filters (status, date, and so on) to the listed messages.

You can read, reply to, or forward your e-mail within NEO Find, but you can′t compose a new message; for that, or to access your calendar, contacts, or other features, you′ll need to switch back to Outlook.

If you don′t mind the program switching and you tend to run e-mail searches frequently, the inexpensive NEO Find could help you manage your inbox. But it′s too bad that its creators didn′t roll everything into the existing Outlook window.

When I reviewed Lenovo′s ThinkPad W700 desktop replacement notebook, I described it as taking a kitchen-sink approach to mobile computing, mainly because it has a high-end CPU and workstation graphics, a huge screen, and an integrated drawing tablet. The W700′s new sibling, the W700ds, brings another dish into the dining room–a second, slide-out display.

Many people use multiple monitors with their desktops; it′s a cheap way of gaining screen real estate (cheaper than simply buying one really big monitor). But the W700ds already has a very large monitor, for a laptop–a 17-inch, 1920-by-1200 resolution model with 400 nits of brightness. The second screen has a diagonal measurement of 10.6 inches, or the same size as the ones found on some small netbooks, but oriented vertically; it has a resolution of 768-by-1280 pixels.

The secondary screen is of the same height as the main screen, but because it is stored in the lid behind the main screen, it rests about half an inch farther away from you; that distance was enough to throw off my perception of it as extra desktop. It felt clunky, for example, to store Photoshop tools on the second screen. The bigger issue is that the second screen′s image quality seemed pretty poor to me, with a very narrow angle of view, and the main screen′s viewing angle already seemed pretty bad. You′ll be viewing the second screen from an angle nearly all the time, too, unless you lean over to the right, as I often did. Despite fiddling with several settings and trying the notebook′s built-in Pantone color calibrator, I could not get consistent colors on the main screen or the secondary screen.

The secondary screen doesn′t seem all that sturdy, either, and it′s stuck out there in a pretty vulnerable spot. It probably goes without saying that polite owners wouldn′t be able to use it on an airplane, except perhaps in the first-class section of the cabin. The notebook′s lid alone is nearly an inch thick, too–that′s thicker than many ultraportable laptops are altogether.

The W700ds we tested came with a 2.53GHz Core 2 Quad Extreme QX9300 processor–a $1000 upgrade from the 2.8-GHz Core 2 Duo T9600 processor in the Thinkpad W700 we tested. The costlier CPU may speed some multicore applications, but it didn′t help at all on our PC WorldBench 6 benchmark. The W700ds earned a score of 98, a single point less than the W700 we tested. That′s a statistically insignificant difference, but if it were my money, I′d like to see a little more benefit from the costlier CPU. Both systems had 4GB of RAM, two hard drives configured in a RAID array, and nVidia Quadro FX3700M workstation graphics; and both ran on Windows Vista Business 64-bit.

As with the W700, the W700ds performed well on game tests, running Far Cry at 1280-by-1024 resolution with antialiasing enabled at 187 frames per second. But the W700 ran the same test at 219 fps–an odd discrepancy, given that we conducted all of our tests of the W700ds with the second screen stowed. We can only attribute the difference to the faster clock speed of the CPU in the W700.

The battery in the W700ds lasted about 3 hours, which was the same length of time as the W700–as long as we had the secondary screen stowed. When we ran our battery test on the notebook with the screen activated, the battery life dropped by half, to only 1 hour and 46 minutes–another reason to keep the second screen off on long airplane flights.

The W700 is the second laptop to incorporate a drawing tablet (the W700 was the first, of course), and it′s a neat addition to the notebook; if you′re going to buy a humongous portable, you might as well do something productive with all that space. The digitizer pen stows in a spring-loaded slot on the right side, and it′s pressure-sensitive, so you can use it with sensitivity-aware applications like Photoshop and Corel Painter, and with Windows Tablet PC input.

The notebook, as with most Thinkpads, provides an excellent keyboard, with big keys that have lots of travel, and a separate number pad. It has an eraserhead pointing device and a trackpad; unfortunately, you can use the drawing tablet for mouse inputs only if you use the pen.

The second screen doesn′t add much functionality, and it consumes an inordinate amount of battery life. It′s a pretty big waste of money, too–it adds $420 to the cost of an otherwise-comparable W700. For that money, you could buy a 24-inch desktop display, connect it to a W700, and enjoy a desktop that stretches from here to Sunday. The W700 is a well-designed desktop replacement notebook; the W700ds adds nothing that I couldn′t get in another, better form, for less money.

The $100 (as of 3/3/09) Canon Pixma iP4600 color inkjet printer is inexpensive to buy and maintain. Although it′s minimally equipped and slow when printing text, it′s still worth considering for the budget-minded home user and amateur photographer.

The Pixma iP4600 printed fairly well on plain paper in our tests. Though text pages exited at a snail′s pace of 7.3 pages per minute (ppm), they looked black and crisp on all but the most intricate fonts. Photos were slightly grainy and pale, but still acceptable. Predictably, Canon′s own photo paper improved matters: Images showed better detail and smoothness, and flesh tones were pleasing despite containing a slight hint of yellow. Best of all, the iP4600 printed photos quickly–its 1.9-ppm rate is currently one of the best results we′ve seen.

All that attractive output costs well below average to print, too. At the time of this review, the standard-size inks cost $15 for a 350-page pigment black for printing text (or 4.3 cents per page). The remaining dye-based colors–cyan, magenta, yellow, and a second photo black designed for greater color depth–have yields ranging from 471 to 665 pages. A page with all four colors (except photo black) cost 12.2 cents at this writing.

The Pixma iP4600 has many nice features, but it makes one odd omission: It has no media readers, offering just a front PictBridge port instead. I don′t understand how Canon can market this model as a photo printer when it lacks the ability to read cards.

You do get two input trays: a bottom-dwelling cassette, which takes only plain paper (150 sheets), and a rear vertical tray for up to 150 sheets of various media, including envelopes, photo paper, and legal-size paper. Automatic two-sided printing is an impressive inclusion on a printer this inexpensive.

Canon makes setup easy even for novices. Instructions in the concise “Getting Started” pamphlet are clear and amply illustrated. The printer communicates status and error messages via your computer screen, which is good, because all that the printer′s front panel provides are two buttons with LEDs that light or blink in ways that are largely mysterious until you consult the documentation.

Even missing a few luxuries such as media slots and an LCD screen, the Canon Pixma iP4600 is still an excellent–and inexpensive–choice for your home. Out of the box, using standard cartridges, printing color on the iP4600 is a lot cheaper than doing so on its close competitor, the HP Photosmart D5460.
